Banding Together to Help Make History! (will appear till Inauguration Day…Latest posts below)
As you may already be aware, history will be made this coming Tuesday, January 20th as President-elect Obama is inaugurated. Even more amazing…For the first time in history, The Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA), a musical organization comprised of marching and concert bands from across the United States and around the world, has been chosen to perform in the parade for the inauguration. Again, this is the first time in history that a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group will march in a Presidential Inaugural Parade.
The 177-piece LGBT band will join groups from across the country as well as from the Armed Forces in the historic parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, which follows President-elect Barack Obama’s
swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol.
“I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade,” Obama said in a news release. “These organizations embody the best of our nation’s history, diversity, and commitment to service. Vice President-elect (Joe) Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade.”
However, they need your help! Participants are responsible for paying for their own lodging, transportation, and other expenses. And it’s not cheap! There are many expenses associated with the contingent’s historic participation, and you can help! Please make a donation online by clicking here. 100% of the donation will go directly to the band. There are no administrative costs involved.
Your tax-deductible contributions can help our musicians through rehearsals and the performance:
- $10 will provide lunch for a musician during rehearsal (200 lunches needed)
- $15 to provide one case of water (23 cases needed)
- $15 will purchase handwarmers for one rank of musicians (22 ranks)
- $40 to provide one musician’s bus seat to the parade and back (180 seats needed)
- $75 will sponsor a piece of music (we’re playing 5 pieces)
- $400 to furnish one new banner to say who we are, loud and clear
So please, be part of this historic moment as I’m sure you’ll share in the pride of having LGBT representation at the inauguration.
